County OKs study of turbine noise

County officials say an outside and independent source is needed because no one on county government boards has the expertise as it relates to sound from turbines. The need also is driven by input from several residents who have complained of noise from turbines nearby their homes.

JPC to set wind turbine recommendations

Board members agreed upon restrictions on large industrial wind turbines to include: turbines could only be located in areas of the county zoned rural industrial (I3); set back distances would be one mile, 5,280 feet, from property lines; property owners who sign agreements with wind energy companies would receive no waiver on the set back limitation; and sound levels would be restricted to 30 decibels or less.

Lake Township raises restrictive bar in wind energy ordinance

The draft sets stricter setbacks for wind turbines from residences, and from Lake Huron, Rush Lake and game areas; reduces maximum sound levels; provides broader protection for wildlife and endangered species; defines specific height requirements; addresses shadow flicker; establishes a complaint procedure; specifies site placement requirements; and sets requirements for security bonding and decommissioning.

Somerset wind ordinance sent back for review

A draft ordinance to regulate large-scale wind turbines will be sent back to the Somerset County Planning Commission for review and possible revisions before County Commissioners will consider its adoption. The commissioners last week asked Planning Commission members to review the document, make revisions, hold a public hearing and send their recommendation back to the commissioners by Oct. 3.

Legal fund will back Alexandria in wind farm case

The establishment of the RBO was in response to proposed wind-energy projects in the area that are, at present, licensed by the state’s Site Evaluation Committee, leaving local communities with little input into the projects’ outcome. RBO backers want a say in the decision to grant a permit for a meteorological tower to EDP Renewables of Portugal.

New Ohio law mandates larger turbine setback distances

Today Ohio Governor Kasich signed into law a requirement that setbacks be measured from property lines, not nearby residences. If a wind developer wants to locate turbines closer than the new setback allows, the developer must negotiate easements and compensate rural landowners for the intrusion of wind turbine project impacts.

Canton OKs money to rebuild road; rejects five ordinances

The project is part of a larger plan that could include similar wind projects in the neighboring towns of Dixfield and Carthage. Those projects are also being developed by Patriot Renewables. The company has been working with the three towns for several years. Canton was the only one of the three not to request a moratorium on wind energy projects.
