Governor calls green energy a success

Patrick's wind energy goal - 2,000 megawatts by 2020 - is still a long way off and has been greeted with suspicion from opponents of both land-based and offshore wind energy projects. Currently the state has 103 megawatts of wind energy installed, all on land. Projects have been roundly criticized by neighbors and other foes of wind energy who say the technology is unreliable and damaging to public health.

Poll helps to define energy challenge

You'd think proponents of wind power and those passionate about America's pristine lands would walk hand-in-hand on the issue of renewable energy. You'd assume each side would see the value of a united front. And you'd hope they'd want to avoid the tedious process of appeals and litigation that only serves to maintain the status quo.

Tri-State: $1 billion cost to meet Colorado's renewable-energy goal

The $1 billion figure covers the cost of new wind farms, natural gas power plants to provide power when the wind isn't blow and transmission lines, Dave Lock, Tri-State's senior manager for government relations told a new committee Wednesday. ...Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, said that "in a perfect world" the committee would have been convened to reach consensus on the issues a year ago.

State asks for long-term clean energy bids

Connecticut's request for proposals is open to Class I energy projects in New England built this year. The state is seeking contracts for about 174 megawatts of clean energy projects, like solar panels, wind turbines, hydropower dams or geothermal systems, which will amount to about 4 percent of the state's energy use. And the contracts could last up to 20 years.

Nearly completed CREZ lines unlock wind congestion

Sometimes with long transmission lines that are lightly loaded, such as CREZ, it can be hard to control voltage," he says. "Wind energy needs a source to stabilize it and make it stay in sync." Also, as more CREZ-related projects attempt to tie in with the grid, abnormally hot or cold spring and fall temperatures - leading to unexpected high power demand on the system - could cause delays.

New NH law changes criteria for site evaluation of energy projects

The bill requires the Site Evaluation Committee to adopt new rules to clarify siting requirements. The bill originally called for a moratorium on new energy projects until the study was complete. A moratorium would have prevented the Northern Pass transmission project as well as several wind farms proposed on ridges around Newfound Lake from seeking the site committee's approval.

Obama's plan: A massive new climate tax

Indiana’s electric cooperatives stand with the majority of Indiana’s congressional delegation in support of reasonable and responsible environmental regulation. Unfortunately, the President’s proposal is neither reasonable nor responsible.

Obama planning to sidestep Congress for next phase in climate change agenda

Obama will announce he's issuing a presidential memorandum to implement the regulations, meaning none of the steps involved in the plan will require congressional approval. In addition, Obama will say he is directing his administration to allow enough renewables on public lands to power 6 million homes by 2020, effectively doubling the capacity from solar, wind and geothermal projects on federal property.

Location may stymie wind and solar power benefits

These renewable energies emit less carbon dioxide and air pollution than burning fossil fuels for electricity. But the windiest and sunniest places in the United States - such as the southwestern plains and deserts - are not always the most socially and environmentally beneficial sites for wind turbines and solar panels.
